Rob Inwood Becomes Mayor of Royston

Royston Lib Dems are pleased that after 12 years as a Councillor – now representing Palace Ward at Town and District Councils, Rob Inwood has become Royston Mayor for the year 20011-12.

The role of Mayor is ceremonial, but there is also a role to play as Chairman of the Town Council.

The Mayor’s role is to chair the Town Council meetings in a non-political way, as the Mayor must be independent and above party politics.  This is quite different from the role of leader of the Council.  That title is given to the leader of the majority party – in Royston of course that is the Conservatives.  The Mayor is an independent person who is required to enable debate in an even handed way and without predudice.  Therefore, during his term of office Rob is not able to use his party affilation to influence or skew any matters relating  to the Town Council and its decisions and activities.

His role as a Liberal Democrat District Councillor is not affected in this way.
