Steve Jarvis is standing for re-election to the County Council for Royston West and Rural. For the last four years Steve has worked to get the council to do a better job of fixing our roads, take action on traffic and speeds, improve the environment with wilding and biodiversity improvements and support local groups and organisations working for Royston and the villages. Steve has also worked to get some safety improvements underway at last on the A505 and to get the County Council to provide free school meals in holidays at Christmas and Easter.

I’m committed to listening to people in Royston and acting on the important issues. I’ve seen how hard our local Liberal Democrat councillors work and I want to make the same contribution.
I’m talking to people all across Royston on the doorstep at present. Residents on The Close have been telling me about their concerns on speeding. People on Lime Grove have told me we need to focus on more activities for youth - and all over Royston people tell me about their hopes for a more vibrant town centre.
If I’m elected, I commit to support the Royston Business Improvement District and support investment in a green recovery of our town centre. Our market has thrived during lockdown - I’m encouraging everyone to support the NHDC pledge to Shop Safe, Shop Local. Improving our town centre means more space for pedestrians and cyclists and more special events to make Royston a local destination.
Covid has hit young people hard and I want to commit to youth services and facilities to invest in the next generation. Investing funds from developers in improving our community through youth facilities is a key area for me to explore to increase opportunity in Royston.
I want to make sure we make Royston an even greener and sustainable place to live. Building on the Plastic Free Town initiative I will push for NHDC to make litter picking by volunteers easier and safer with less red tape and continue to take strong action on fly tipping. Our community also runs some brilliant community facilities for sustainability such as Terracycle and our Repair Cafe which I would strongly encourage to continue and expand.
Liberal Democrats on Hertfordshire County Council want to invest £3 million in new cycle paths over the next four years, £5.5 million in tree planting and £2.5 million on Electric Vehicle charging. I support this strong green investment plan and will work to attract as much investment as possible to the Royston area.
I believe we need to cut vehicle use around town for short trips and reduce speeds to make Royston a safer place for everyone. I will push to make 20 mph the default speed limit on residential roads in Hertfordshire as proposed by the 20’s Plenty campaign. This is a simpler, more cost effective way to reduce speeds and make roads safer.
We have to balance the need for sustainable housing against the threat of opportunistic and inappropriate new developments around Royston. Like many neighbours I objected to the recently defeated Gladman development proposal when it was first proposed in 2020. I have also objected to the proposed development off the Barkway Road as I believe the pressure on traffic using Barkway road would be unsustainable.

Councillor Ruth Brown Royston Heath & West is standing for Hertfordshire County Council in the Royston East & Ermine Division. Ruth has lived in Royston for over 30 years, her three children attended the local schools and she has been an active member of many community organisations.
Her roles have included 7 years as a parent governor of Tannery Drift School and 15 years as co-pastor of Trinity Life Church, Royston which founded the Open House Youth project and now runs Make Lunch. She is currently Vice-Chair for the German link of Royston & District Twinning Association which involves organising trips, visits and events with Grossalmerode, including promoting a link between their recently formed Youth Council and the proposed Royston Youth Council.
Ruth has spent most of her working life in the voluntary sector, currently as a trainer for a mental health charity and understands the importance of volunteering to local communities. She is passionate about creating a greener, fairer and more caring society and believes everyone deserves to have an equal opportunity to access services, jobs and education. She is working to promote a more sustainable community through increasing recycling, supporting environmental initiatives such as 'Plastic Free Royston' and increasing sustainable travel.
